..Southpaw Appreciation Day..

August 13th, 2007

Thanks to Chris for brining this to our attention.

“The anomaly is left-handed people make up the extremely gifted and the extremely compromised,” said Hopkins. “The rest of us make up the middle ground.”

Once again, hurray for being abnormal! Happy day to my fellow lefties!

..USGA USWAC..

August 13th, 2007

My brother works for the Indiana Golf Foundation, coordinating junior tournaments and coaching summer teams. Because of this, he also works very closely with the United States Golf Association (USGA). This past week was the United States Women’s Amateur Championship. That means it was the best non-professional women golfers in the country (and out of the country) competing. My mom and I volunteered to work the event which was held at Crooked Stick Golf Club located on the north side of Indianapolis.

I love almost everything about golf. The mind-game that it is, the competing against yourself, beautiful golf courses, being outside, the silence, etc. Practically the only thing I don’t like about it is that it is still, for the most part, a rich white person’s game. It used to be a rich white man’s game, but I think enough ground has been gained that we can say person’s. The next step might be to make a rich person’s game, and then we can get on with the economic barrier. It will be difficult though, because golf is an expensive game to play and that is not going to change.

Mom and I played the part of the standard bearers, which means we carried and held up the signs that showed the score of the match.

Like this…only we aren’t these guys. Because if we were, we’d have sweat ourselves to death. It was the hottest week of the summer here in Indiana. Just my luck. However, it was a small price to pay to get to follow 12-year old Alexis Thompson on Wednesday. Composed and relaxed, she made me laugh at how mature I thought I was at 12. Friday we got to follow 17-year old Maria Jose Uribe, from Columbia. She is, at this very hour, competing in the championship match, and I wish I wasn’t going to church instead of going to watch her play. As she has gone deeper into the tournament her fan club is growing. The ground crew at Crooked Stick, many of whom are Latino have been following her all week. The number of them that show up to watch in their grounds keeping uniforms increases the farther she advances. It was wonderful to see how a common ancestry creates an instant connection. At one point I adjusted the scoring standard so that a golf cart full of the crew could see the score: Uribe 3up. I was met with great big smiles of satisfaction.

..sunrise..

August 9th, 2007

According to my body’s clock, it’s 5:00 am. I’m wide awake because I went to bed at 9:20 pm. Indiana is on Eastern Standard Time now, so it’s an hour later than it is in Nashville. Because of this, the sun isn’t up yet. In fact, there’s no sign of it. It’s as dark as it was when I went to bed. To be honest, I’m a bit giddy over it. I’ve worked in coffee for the last 4 years, and there are many times I’ve been up before the sun, not wide awake and unable to appreciate the sunrise.

Yesterday I said my final goodbyes in Nashville, including to the house on Carolyn Ave and all the neighboring houses. That house will always be associated with some of my best memories and a source of comfort if I ever need a laugh. I have been blessed in the last months to have many perfect meetings with friends. They have just been beautiful. The beauty is partly because I am in a time of change and moving on to something exciting. I’ve had a certain energy lately. I’m not sure what it is. As I was leaving Bongo Java yesterday, saying goodbye one more time, someone said to me, “You look really happy. It’s true. It isn’t just me adding to this beauty, it’s the people I love and have spent time with. I’ve been able to have the best conversations in the last month about all sorts of important things. There has been a depth of conversation that hasn’t existed before, even with acquaintances. Perhaps it’s because there is lots to talk about when someone is moving to Jerusalem. It seems to open people up to talking about issues of the soul. And, those who know me well understand that I don’t like small talk. I would rather get right to what’s going on inside. I’ve learned much about myself in the last couple months, and it seems that many of the questions I still have about who I am and some of the wondering about what my life is supposed to be like are beginning to have answers.

Must go. Time to catch the sunrise.
